Intercity trains like the NSW XPT are diesel powered because of limitation of infrastructure and power limitation in the case of the Indian pacific and the ghan but most metro trains like the moderately new Adelaide metro A-City class 4000 are electric
Besides ain't no sane person rebuilding the Nullarbor rail line for electric services
