Latest projection is Republicans take the House by 219-216: The second-narrowest majority possible. Controlling a majority of that size and as divided and unruly as Republicans are known to be is likely to be a near-impossible task.

Perhaps they can all unite around partisan hatchet-jobs like launching bogus investigations of the Bidens. What else?

This result would also mean control of the U.S. House literally rests upon the new gerrymanders over the past couple years that bagged Republicans a few unearned seats.

A short-term victory, but would come at a price, and with a significant backlash. Not only will it infuriate Democratic voters and drive even more turnout in '24, it would show quite clearly that all blue states that aren't gerrymandering just as hard as the red states are being chumps.

chumps yes, but there's got to be a better answer than more gerrymandering. part of the GOP's problem is the swing voters they alienate with tactics like that. if the Dems close that gap by using similar cheats, I'd have trouble voting for either party.

The solution is, of course, a comprehensive election fairness bill along the lines of what Democrats have already proposed but that Republicans standing on their filibuster left for dead.

Failing that, a nice pro-democracy decision by the Supreme Court in any of these gerrymandering cases that come their way would be nice. Of course, with the Court’s current composition, that’s also never going to happen.

Democrats really do need to start gerrymandering more in order to increase leverage on Republicans on this issue, because no other tools are available. Once Republicans see Democrats are willing to do it too, in equal proportion, in a kind of mutually-assured electoral destruction, their incentives will change, and they’ll get in a more compromising mood.

Tl;dr sometimes you gotta be cruel to be kind, in the right measure
