No matter what the GOP decides to think and say about its disappointing 2022 midterm performance - and no matter if they keep or ditch Trump - one thing they'll never grapple with fully is the extent to which the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision (and the sweeping abortion bans passed by several states in its wake) has now placed a hard ceiling on the GOP's maximum support in virtually every race around the country.
America is a pro-choice electorate. Not by much, but we are.
Republicans, however, have become far too married to the "pro-life" movement to admit error on this issue. And even if the GOP did see some reason on this issue which most Republicans see in absolutist terms - what's done cannot, at this point, be undone. The Supreme Court isn't going to restore Roe any time soon, nor are Republicans in Congress - and the Democratic Party looks unlikely to win enough power in Congress to ever restore Roe on a party-line vote, either, so long as the Senate filibuster remains in place.
Therefore, in post-Roe America, abortion rights will remain on the ballot, in every state, in every race, every 2 years, for decades to come - keeping turnout high, especially among young, reproductive-age voters who are otherwise difficult to get to show up at the polls.
No matter what else changes from year to year about the Republican Party and its personalities and standard-bearers, American woman who don't want their uteruses commandeered by the state (and men who support their reproductive rights) are totally lost to the GOP for at least a generation.
