Current criteria for a blue checkmark include “authentic, notable, active.” Satisfy all three, and you get one — no money required.

Details of Musk’s plan have yet to be finalized, but from what I’ve read, the “notability” criteria will be replaced with “pay Twitter $8/month” (or however much it ends up being).

This totally misunderstands what makes the blue checkmark valuable — rather than a proxy for who on Twitter is notable, it will become a proxy for who on Twitter is willing to shell out $8/month. Two very different things.
