You can turn that logic around and ask: Why is Elon Musk taking loud, controversial political stances that are likely to place him at odds with Tesla's customer base?
Remember that Musk tried to back out of the Twitter deal, probably having second (and better) thoughts about it, but a Delaware court ordered him to proceed.
Quite apart from whether Musk is losing money on Twitter itself (and he is: $10 billion already), his ambitions to be the boss of everything run a very real risk of placing his various business ventures in conflict with one another.
Musk is certainly buying himself lots of press attention. But at what cost? Well, when you're the richest man in the world, you can afford to light money on fire, but at this rate I don't think he'll be the world's richest man for long.
