I assume that whatever happens to Twitter, it will never get as bad as those far-right ideological cesspits.

You know, I'm not above crediting alt-tech platforms when they make the right calls.

"Free speech" notwithstanding, I don't care who you are, Nazis are bad for business

Nope. You don't have a point.

Nick Fuentes wears a suit & tie. He's polished in front of a camera. He knows how to avoid using the worst of the worst language, while still getting his vile racist and anti-semitic filth across.

However: When you allow someone like Nick Fuentes on your platform, then you attract not just Nick Fuentes himself, but also all the Nick Fuentes fanboys who aren't quite as careful. They @ him with crap like this. Then what?

When average users encounter enough bullshit like this in their daily user experience, they'll leave. Advertisers will drop you. Your platform will enter a death-spiral as more and more bigots pile in and eventually you'll end up as a toxic cesspit, like KiwiFarms, at which point mainstream ISPs will drop you as well.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwi_Farms

Most "free-speech" oriented alt-tech platforms therefore have some kind of ban on racism/bigotry, even if they're more permissive than mainstream forums like, say, the New York Times comments section.

Lol. Gab.

Andrew Torba is an out-and-proud white Christian nationalist. He's by far the most outspoken and aggressively political social media boss that I know of, more so than even Elon Musk. He may be "genuine" in that he will tell you exactly what he is about. His political project certainly thrills some. But most find it repugnant.

Despite Torba's "free speech" pretensions, he quite clearly disfavors certain kinds of users and takes action against certain kinds of content that other platforms would allow. Pretty sure Gab's definition of "porn" bears less resemblance to the legal definition and more to a high-school dress code.

So while Torba is out there cracking down on the evils of outfits that any woman would wear to the beach or pool, one thing he is absolutely proud about allowing to flow freely on his platform is anti-semitism. Go figure.

So as much as Torba wants to position himself as the champion of "Christians," all that controversy and all that noise creates a hard ceiling on how far Gab can spread.

Same with Truth Social. It's the Donald Trump show. Stop by to gawk at whatever story of the moment is currently buzzing him and his followers. However, accounts and users critical of him and his fixations aren't going to travel far.

And didn't Kanye West recently agree to buy Parler? Same.

All these narcissistic social media bosses are fighting over the same pie of mostly right-wing users who feel alienated by mainstream tech for whatever reason.

Nothing wrong with being white or any other race. I'm white. My family is white. Most of my coworkers are white. I have white friends! Nobody loves white folks more than Slobama, believe me!

Nothing wrong with being Christian, as long as you're actually following Christ's teachings and not weaponizing religion in a cultish way to justify, say, polygamy or child abuse. Would the Mormon Church know anything about that?

"Nationalism" connotes a kind of aggressive and brain-dead form of patriotism. Blind obedience to leaders, punching down at minorities and Jews, stomping on the rights of foreigners and the LGBTQ community, those sorts of things. To the extent those things are happening, nationalism is Bad. Benign, non-toxic love of one's country is what I would define as "patriotism," and that is fine.

Can't say I identify with white Christian nationalism at all. It seems to be 21st-century fascism plain and simple. But if you like it, knock yourself out.

Polygamy in the Mormon Church is a historical fact. Who says I'm anti-Mormon for pointing it out? Nothing stops faithful Mormons from wrestling honestly with this part of LDS history, and many have.

Hit-job? Think again: The site's researched & maintained by a lovely Mormon couple
