Brace yourselves — if Republicans win the House, impeachment is coming. They will do it because they will have the numbers. They will do it because their base wants it. They will do it because Trump personally demands it. They will do it simply to seize control of the narrative and the headlines. They will do it because it will allow them to falsely equate the Democrats’ inevitable rejection of their bogus charges with the GOP’s own prior stonewalling of Trump’s two impeachments. They will do it to pre-emptively take the wind out of the sails of any future impeachment of a hypothetical second-term Trump. They will do it because they reject the 2020 election. They will do it simply to further perpetuate the GOP’s decades-long project of eroding confidence in the American state. They will not be doing it based upon any legitimate assessment of facts and law. They will do it anyway because, at bottom, they fundamentally reject the notion of a Democrat being in charge: anywhere, ever.
