Loretip: Ascension Portals
Ascension Portals were placed in towns and cities long ago by mages and wizards travelling to connect the world together, and most can be used still with inactive ones requiring repair for instant travel. As long as a person can channel the right paths to a portal they have been to before, unique for everyone they can travel somewhere, even regions apart.
This means that someone can travel from one ascension portal to the other as long as they've been to that portal before. Portals can be made up of any magic material from mushrooms to stone, but each region has different portals and some towns have special ones. In Verheil, the portal represents a magic sigil stave for "Safe Travels".
Sigils were the only way to use magic in the past, but new research within the last few centuries means anyone can learn to cast a spell with only their mind and memory. Some old-fashioned mages still use Sigil Staves, improved and kept by a scarce few to be even more powerful than regular magic, but still quite burdensome.
