Here's a little lore for you:
When Night ate the apple and became Nightmare, he destroyed the tree, killed everyone while Dream turned to stone. All the people that Noot killed became Zombies :)

Dream can actually kill Nightmare

If Dream does, he returns to the destroyed tree, and burries his soul there. He then rips his own out as well, and also burries it. Him doing that kills him, and it causes a true reset on the entire AU. Not only will their memories reset, but all the people who knew them will automatically forget about them and have no-idea who they are. This includes the AU. no-one will know what it is
