MIXING BOOKS AND BEATS - A
Reflective Essay On The Phenomenon
Of Music Affecting Study And Creative
Inspiration (Written By SimoTheFinlandized
/ Paul Palazzolo In 2022 CE):
===========================================
Scientific research has indicated that listening to
music while studying can affect learning. Depending
on the person, what music they listen to, and what they
are studying, it may help or hinder the learning process
greatly - the optimal music (or the inherent lack thereof)
used for studying is highly individualized.
===========================================
PART ONE ~ DEPENDING ON THE PERSON:
===========================================
When it comes to determining the particular song or
genre of music that helps you to feel good, regulate
their mood, and to enjoy the moment, chances are very
high that it's your call to make regarding what music
makes you feel good for the moment. When it comes to
determining what music to listen to while studying to
optimize studying and to stimulate learning, or if you
need to listen to music to do so at all, nothing really
changes - it's still your call. It would be highly advised
that you casually experiment with yourself on different
songs or musical genres while you are studying, as
well as to record the data resultant of such, so that you
can empirically know for certain what particular kinds of
music may help you with optimizing your efficacy while
studying, or even if you actually need music to
stimulate your learning to begin with. Each person is in
fact wired differently, as are their individual musical
tastes and their most effective methods of learning - it
would make more than ample sense to treat this
particular self-discovering ordeal accordingly.
===========================================
PART TWO ~ DEPENDING ON THE MUSIC:
===========================================
Just as much as it depends on the person listening to
the music in this educational ordeal, the kind of music
that is being listened to while studying plays an equally
important role. Many scientific studies have in fact
shown that certain types of music, in addition to the
characteristics of said music, are better for studying
than others. For example, music that is very loud, fast-
paced, full of audio-based adrenaline, and containing
plenty of lyrics that are designed to be sung along to
(give-or-take the inordinately high volume exhibited
and/or the verbal aggression involved while doing so)
may potentially interfere with the process of learning for
many people. As you can imagine, actively lip-syncing
with song lyrics takes quite a lot of mental
concentration to follow through with - it can be very
distracting for many people in many cases, and can
greatly hinder the learning capabilities of the person
studying. So, as much as listening to Sabaton (a
Swedish power-metal band that sings almost
exclusively about military-history, much to the oblate joy
of history fanatics everywhere - I'm just giving you the
context) may potentially aid a failing history student in
catching up on missing coursework and
comprehending the exploits of heroes from yonder glen
via its song lyrics, it isn't all that advised that you listen
to their music while studying for a final exam - unless
you want to readily recall everything you ever wanted to
know about The Red Baron during a college
examination about nuclear physics, that is (it is very ill-
advised, however humorous the situation may seem).
I'd personally suggest that you listen to more relaxed-
in-tempo and instrumental classical music like that of
Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig Van Beethoven
instead, if that helps. However, this doesn't mean you
can't power-metal for academics at all - you actually
can, in fact. But I wouldn't really use it for studying.
===========================================
PART THREE ~ DEPENDING ON THE SUBJECT:
===========================================
As you can probably already imagine, listening to
music while engaged in academics can be helpful in
many cases. But I don't know for certain if you took the
time to realize that music can also be used to gain
creative inspiration, especially for art-related classes
where making creative projects for almost every other
assignment is pretty much your academic bread-and-
butter. Many artists, both past and present-day, can
readily credit their inspiration for creating such
magnificent pieces of artwork to listening to their
favorite music. I really don't care if your favorite music to
listen to on a regular basis is Beyonce, Johann
Sebastian Bach, or the aforementioned Sabaton as of
the last paragraph - if the music you listen to on a
regular basis for enjoyment inspires you to keep going
in life at full-steam ahead, it can have very much the
same level of effect with keeping your creative juices
flowing as well.
===========================================
CONCLUSION:
===========================================
In conclusion, it is quite very evident that, in many
cases (though not for all), listening to music while
studying and/or gaining creative inspiration in the field
of academics can be extremely beneficial in optimizing
your efficacy while doing so. However, the music that is
needed to be listened to, for the maximizing of your
academic and creative abilities, is very individualized
based on the person's inherent needs, musical
preferences, and the tasks that are needed to be
completed. The process for determining that particular
music is also equally very unique, and should be
determined by the person via means that are equally
pertaining to the individual, as well. Everyone has their
own unique song that gets them going to live their life to
the fullest extant possible, and as the old song goes
(and will continue to go on as, as far as I'm aware),
they'll do it their way- all the way. So go ahead and let
them face the music!
