She's a Yaqui & Apache named Sacheem Littlefeather. The Academy didn't give her much time to speak, & the audience was booing her. This incident led to her being blacklisted, prematurely ending her acting career. She couldn't even go on talk shows to defend herself. Backstage John Wayne was threatening her with violence & had to be restrained by 6 security personnel. Afterword, Clint Eastwood mocked her while presenting the next award. She received many death threats over the years, & someone
shot at her when she went to see Brando afterward. In June 2022 the Academy officially apologized for the way she was treated. She accepted; she also said that if she could go back,
she would make the speech again.
