Fetal homicide laws vary widely from state to state. I think it’s fair to give force to the idea that violent crimes against pregnant women are especially detestable, and deserving of higher sentences.
At least prior to Roe v. Wade being overturned, these laws also had the effect of imposing higher punishment for violent criminals, while doing nothing to restrain a woman’s right to obtain an abortion for herself.
How can those two ideas coexist?!?!?!? You might ask.
Life begins at conception!!! Totally illogical!!!!
Well: Maybe not!
Because the violent criminal’s “fetal homicide” crime:
…Wait for it…
****Robs the woman of her choice to continue her pregnancy.****
That’s her choice, and hers alone. Not the state’s choice, and certainty not the choice of some random violent weirdo. That’s how it would work in a state that both protects abortion rights and has “fetal homicide” laws.
It’s not a “pro-life” law. It’s a pro-choice law!
