Forget Canada - how about America?
Our state is more miserly and less "socialist" than the likes of Canada, Denmark, Sweden, etc. We don't have "free universal healthcare" for everyone, we don't have countrywide paid family leave, we don't have universal pre-K.
But we *do* have public schools (i.e. K-12 financed by taxes). We *do* have universal healthcare for certain groups: Senior citizens, military, etc. We *do* have unemployment benefits, even if they might terminate earlier and come with more strings attached than in other countries.
It's a difference of degree, not kind.
We collect taxes, we spend tax revenue. A lot of it goes toward military defense contractors and tax breaks for mega-corps, but a lot of it goes back to the people and to worthy causes.
Is all of this "socialist"? That depends entirely on how you define the term. If it is, then both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party are socialist.
