Prior to World War 1 Israel pretty much didn't exist. They got stomped several times through history and lost their land several times. The British gave them the land they held because they remembered the Crusades and didn't want to go through that again. Since then, Israel is all about Jews, not Christians, and not long ago declared themselves a "Jewish state". There's some argument about "ethnic Jews" and "religious Jews" and they tend to switch back and forth playing identity politics. That's why the Christian church is in Italy.
