It's a really stupid story, even most furries don't like it. From what I understand, the person who created them tried to copyright them and make it so people didn't have permission to make protogen stuff, and all it did was create a ton of backlash.

Technically, they're allowed to 'own' protogens as an IP, thanks to intellectual property rights, but the only thing they could possibly sue over is commercial use, which is both too shaky and far too vast to do anything about, especially when taking into consideration other facets of copyright law.

If I’m correct, this is the very reason many people don’t have primagen OCs. These were the precursor to protogens and they were a closed species, meaning you had to pay to even get an OC.
