Okay, but are we willing to sacrifice our own "prosperity" to save the environment on which our lives depend? Can we define growth and progress in non-material ways?
WITH THE SUPREME COURT'S SHAMEFUL REVERSAL OF ROE V. WADE, IT IS EASY TO FEEL DOWN ABOUT AMERICA THIS YEAR. BUT DESPITE OUR FLAWS, I STILL CELEBRATE AMERICA. WHY? *AMERICANS* WON THE TERRIBLE CIVIL WAR THAT ENDED SLAVERY. *AMERICANS* JOINED THE FEMINIST STRUGGLE THAT BROUGHT WOMEN THE RIGHT TO VOTE. *AMERICANS* BACKED THE LABOR MOVEMENT THAT BROUGHT WORKERS NATIONAL HOLIDAYS AND THE 40-HOUR WORKWEEK. *AMERICANS* JOINED THE ALLIANCE TO DEFEAT THE NAZIS AND IMPERIAL JAPAN. *AMERICANS* LED THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT THAT ENDED SEGREGATION. OUR COUNTRY IS FAR FROM PERFECT - BUT WHAT MAKES US AMERICAN IS OUR CONTINUAL SEARCH FOR THAT MORE PERFECT UNION.
