Many immigrants from Prussia and other German states moved to the United States (primarily the North) across the 1840s and 1850s. When the war broke out, these immigrants, many of whom had experience in Prussian wars, were among the Union’s best soldiers. The Confederacy, while having significantly less, also had a decent amount of Germans fighting in their side, although not in as many numbers as the Irish.
