The article says: of the 20 thousand firearms captured by boarder patrol, only 4000 had US markings and were handed over to the FBI. Of the 4000, yes most came from US sources.
Of the 16,000 without US markings? Most were from military or overseas sources (China.)
So immediately after NOT reading the link, and claiming the overseas sourses was the United States, you read the link and ignored the 16,000 number.
So....

That said, I never claimed 90% of Mexican gun cartel guns are of U.S. origin. I think 70% is a more reasonable estimate. Because of the tracing difficulties cited in your article, we'll never know for sure. It's no doubt a big, big problem.

Most machine guns used by the Mexican cartels do not originate in the USA, but from cheaper foreign sources like Chinese organized crime that operates in Mexico.
