I just remembered: doesn't Spider-Man's origin story's metaphor have "puberty" written all over it? The radioactive spider would be hormones, Peter getting his powers is going thru puberty, and beating the crook is becoming independent. Yet whenever teenage girls are mentioned, everyone goes ballistic. Huh. Interesting.
