For me it isn’t completely useless. I used it in Silph Co. in Let’s Go Eevee when I had to battle Red. My Shiny Graveler knew the move. While I had to revive it to finally get the kill…It helped a lot.

I find it more useful to kill your opponent and live, Self-destruct gives your opponent a secure kill and you an only possible kill, which is also subject to type disadvantage. The main reason it would be useful was if you were already low on HP and Fighting something that didn't resist normal.
