There really is something to this — I think back in the days where you really had to face your adversary in the open and swing swords face-to-face, everyone was more inclined to respect and see the humanity in the other side.
Nowadays death is rained down from hundreds of yards or miles away, you never even have to see their faces before pushing the button and watching them die. Makes it harder to recognize the costs.
