I'm glad you asked. In April of 1943, the USS O'Bannon pulled up too close after an aborted attempt to ram a Japanese submarine. As the Japanese sailors prepared the 3-inch gun on top of the submarine, the O'Bannon's crew threw potatoes at them to slow them down at which the submarine's crew panicked because they thought the potatoes were grenades. This gave the O'Bannon enough time to back off enough to open fire on the submarine.
