1994 - 2004 assault weapon ban did little to nothing to reduce gun deaths, mass shootings, or gun crimes. Bans do nothing but keep law abiding citizens from owning guns. People that want to harm others will with whatever is available.
All guns need to be REALLLLLLY hard to get and keep.
Federal laws consistent state to state would help curb gun crimes and deaths:
- mandatory training with written and practical testing BEFORE license required for purchase.
- mandatory license (renewable)
- mandatory insurance
- registration (annual renewal)
- thorough background checks
- waiting periods (30 days maybe?)
- perhaps even a “step” process for gun testing and purchase: start with revolver, shotgun/rifle, then semi auto pistol/rifle. You wouldn’t be able to just immediately jump into an AR-15 without safety training and testing for the other guns.
ALL guns start out “legal.” It’s just some states are super lax and others aren’t. Either a maniac can simply get a gun easily, or someone “loses” a gun to the maniac in a back alley. But I’m either case the gun is/was legal. That’s the problem. They are too easily “legal” and put in the wrong hands.
Mind you- I’m a REALLY liberal person and own a few guns and love shooting for sport (target and hunting.)
