In 2017 comedy actor Stephen Fry spoke of his dislike of Christianity on Irish TV. He was then investigated by police for the crime of blasphemy. The word Ireland literally means "land of Éire." (Also known as Erin or Ériu) It is odd that a country literally named after a pagan goddess has been so oppressively Christian. That is changing, however. Abortion was legalized in 2019; and due to international embarrassment over the Steven Fry situation the
blasphemy laws were eliminated in 2020.
