Teutonic Mythology Comprises The Traditional
Mytho-Religious Set Of Beliefs Derived From The
Germanic Peoples. Much Of The Knowledge Of Pre-
Christian Germany And Scandinavia Is Preserved In
Two Icelandic Works, The Eddas. According To The
Eddas, Before The Creation Of The World There Was A
Land Of Ice And Shadows Called Niflheim And A Land
Of Fire Known As Muspelheim. The Two Lands
Together Merged And Ultimately Created The
Primordial First Sentient-Being, A Giant Named
Ymir, Who Would Father The Races Of Giants And
Gods. Eventually The God Odin And His Two Other
Divine Brothers Killed Ymir And Founded The
Race Of Gods (The Aesir). Then They
Created The World From Parts Of Ymir's Body
And Made The First Man And Woman From
Pieces Of Trees. At The Center Of The Worlds Of Both
Gods And Men Stood A Giant Ash Tree, Yggdrasil.
Odin, The Head Of The Aesir (Heroic Gods Of Warfare
And Civilization), Was The God Of Poetry And Of
Battle. Valhalla, A Great Hall In Asgard (The Realm Of
The Gods), Was The Resting Place Of Warriors Slain In
Battle. Next In Line To Odin Was Thor, The Hammer-
Wielding Humanity-Protecting God Of Thunder, Rain,
And Fertility. Others Of The Germanic Pantheon
Included The Handsome God-Of-Light-And-Purity
Balder, And Loki The Trickster-God And A Son Of An
Ice-Giant. The Vanir Gods (The Nature-Based Gods Of
Wisdom, Magic, And Fertility), Regarded As Less
Important Than The Aesir, Included Njord The Sea
God, Frey The God Of Wealth And Fertility, And Freya
The Goddess Of Love And Magic; Also Included Among
The Gods Was Hel The Goddess Of Death And The
Underworld.
