Even Trump Administration officials knew the student debt system is broken.
The stereotype of "student debt relief" is that it will only benefit rich Ivy Leaguers coming out of college with six-figure salaries. That is astonishingly rare. The vast majority of student debt in the U.S. is held by those who went to less-prestigious colleges, and were sold a vision of outstanding future job prospects that didn't pan out. Besides, the latest version of Biden's debt relief plan would (1) Not be complete debt forgiveness, only up to a certain amount ($10,000 is the number I've seen tossed around), and; (2) would exclude those making over $150,000/year. Gigantic giveaways to affluent households are simply not a concern.
Here's a test to apply to every pundit coming out of the weeds to oppose Biden's student loan forgiveness plan - If they were against every other economic initiative that would have helped average people, then they have no standing to criticize this one.
Personally I do think universal healthcare, climate change mitigation are more pressing priorities. Student debt relief isn't everything, but it *is* something - and because nothing of significance is capable of passing Congress in the current climate, here we are.
Bottom-line: If Democrats can't deliver on at least *one* major policy that helps average people, then they are really straining the case for anybody to show up to vote for them at all. In 2022 and beyond.
So, forgive the debt.
