Lol the Fentanyl (and prescription pain med, and meth, etc.) crises are horrible, but the fact we’re failing so badly at solving the drug issue is not a *defense* to our failure to solve the gun issue. It’s a deflection. Many countries have a drug crisis, yet we’re the only rich country with a gun crisis.
Drugs are bad — that said, the problems with wielding state power to be excessively punitive about drug usage (“the War on Drugs”) are well-known to most libertarians like yourself. A. Decades of enforcement efforts show it doesn’t work, B. It costs taxpayers a lot of money, C. It infringes on personal liberty.
Even so!
Despite the immense human costs of the drug war, some drugs are so destructive to human life that I think the hardest drugs should remain illegal. But, treatment as opposed to incarceration should be our default approach.
