Actually, it was called football before it was called soccer. America just had a "smart idea" to make their own game and, call it football and then name the real sport of football "soccer". And they have a right to correct you. You may not like it, but, they're just saying what they think is correct. Downvote this comment if you want to. It's not going to change the true facts.
