I've generally found that type of people who get mad at a person for what they do with their own hair are rarely worth trying to make happy.

It really depends on how you want to look.
If you would like shorter hair, cut it short.
If you want longer hair, let it grow out.
It doesn't matter what your family thinks, as long as you are satisfied with how you looks
