According to internet rumors some characters from gen 4 will return in supporting rolls, but I wouldn't expect to see Twilight or Discord.
Hasbro wants mostly new content due to wanting to sell a whole new line of toys and games.
But I guess we'll see when the series hits Netflix.

Yeah, i was wrong.
Since i wrote that, Twilight has shown up on the G5 show, and Discord has shown up in the G5 comics.
I didn't think Hasbro would have a direct link between the generations since that would bring up the uncomfortable questions of how everything Twilight and company worked for was thrown away in a couple hundred years.
At the beginning of G5, the races hate each other again, harmony is gone & magic has left equestria. Compared to the beginning of G4, the world is pretty bad...
