The U.S. Air Force has had investigations of UFOs a few times; Project Blue Book is the best known of those. I don't think there were a lot of officers who thought aliens were coming; there is a much simpler reason. Over the years they have tested various
secret aircraft, some of which looked unusual - like stealth planes. They wanted
to see if citizens had spotted any of them.
