Turning Red is a metaphor for a communist workers revolution, revolting against the bourgeois (the mom) to free themselves from the chains of oppression (perfect little mei mei). The red panda is supposed to be the leader of the revolution, whose goal is to turn the proletariat (the dad and her friends) against the ruling class (mom) and overthrow them. In the end, Mei wins the support of both the dad, her friends, grandma and other relatives and the fight at the 4town concert is supposed to be the last stand of the old capitalistic state, which, defeated by the working class, begins to turn into a socialist state (as we see the mother becoming good at the end and regretting what she did).
