I mean, you can't really blame them. If someone could potentially bring a disguised weapon on board a plane, then you want to bring the probability of that actually happening down as low as possible. After all, it didn't take that much to hijack the 9-11 planes. If that means seizing my water bottle even though everyone almost knows for certain that it's not a bomb, just to send a message to potential terrorists that they won't get away with hijacking a plane so easily ever again, then I'm all for it. Take my water.

I'm pretty skeptical that airlines would have the clout to get official government agents to enforce their petty temporary monopolies with such strictness. I mean, once I accidentally left a water bottle in my bag and the guy talked to me in this kind of intense way like "Will you voluntarily surrender this?" (It was kind of intimidating, but also kind of cool in a "secret agent movie" sort of way.) That sounds a lot more like "you might potentially be a threat to safety" than "Hey, United wants you to buy THEIR water, so I'm afraid you're not allowed to bring that".
