Haiti gained independence, but literally paid a price for it. France demanded reparations for lost slave labor, or they would use their influence to prevent Haiti from being recognized by any other countries. Haiti paid millions of Francs for many years, & also had to sell goods to France for a 50% discount. Thus has Haiti always been the poorest country in the western hemisphere.
