Yeah, but right now Ukraine is learning it was a waste of time to try. Russia came a-callin' at their door, and NATO did a whole lot of nothing.

Well, membership does have its privileges...

And if NATO had been clear of that ahead of time, the world could not blame them for anything. But after the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, followed by Joe Biden's "We're with you all the way!... buh-bye now!" approach, no one can be blamed for not trusting NATO at all.

To be fair, Clinton made promises to Ukraine which 0bama went back on... this has nothing to do with NATO

That would be true if it were not for the fact that NATO (like the US) indicated in recent years it would support Ukraine in the event of Russian aggression. Also, considering that the countries refusing to aid are the same ones who were pressuring Ukraine to join, and considering Ukraine did hold partnership status (albeit not membership status), inaction on the sidelines isn't a good look.

Ukraine is not only on the highest of the three tiers but was also under pressure from NATO member states to join NATO. "Come join our club! Come join our club! We'll protect you." "...Uh, okay. I'll start the application process to join." "Oh wait, you expected us to help you? Sorry. You're not part of the club." NATO betrayed their word no matter how you slice it.
