I don't get it so i'm posting it here, someone explain it to me

There's a (good) movie about a UPS man stuck on a deserted island and he finds a package with a volley ball. Later he cuts his hand and puts a red hand and eyes on the ball and also gives the ball straw hair.

The movie is called castaway if my memory serves me right and the ball’s name is Wilson.
