Really, you're the one who brought up the Latin. It doesn't mean that. My Latin dictionary gives me "filled with young, breeding" as the first meaning and eventually meanders down to "birthing, having given birth".
But the cut-and-dried "it means baby/it means pregnancy" argument is flawed, because pregnancy is a terribly precarious state. As many as 1 in 3 pregnancies terminate themselves naturally: if you ask around, you may be surprised at how many women you know who have experienced miscarriages. A pregnancy is not a baby, merely the strong potential for a baby.
