Things that have been called “socialist”: gay pride marches, Critical Race Theory, voting rights, mainstream news outlets, CDC

Conservatives don’t have a rigorous definition of socialism, is my point. It could be one thing in one discussion and something totally different in the next.

I could list plenty of functional European countries that implement universal healthcare, high taxation, etc., respect human rights and are great places to visit and live, These are the countries that the American Left — Bernie Sanders, AOC etc. — have in mind as models. And they are successful.

Indeed the U.S. itself already has “socialist” policies — see meme.

Basket cases like Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea (and now, Russia) are totalitarian societies, with no political competition and no respect for human rights. No one wants that for America, but right-wingers constantly demagogue and poison serious debate by asserting that’s where Democrats would take us, etc.

Socialism is a spectrum. Every country with a functional government that collects taxes and spends money is socialist to an extent.

So here’s a socialist country for you: The United States of America.
