Did the CDC decide Washington DC could conveniently stop their covid lockdown immediately before the state of the union? Is that following the science or following the politics?

We haven’t had Covid “lockdowns” most places in America for well over a year, so I don’t know what you’re talking about. Lockdowns are not ending now because they’re not in place.

“Lockdown” technically refers to the very tightest level of COVID restrictions that were only in place in most American states/cities for a couple months or so in mid-2020. That early-pandemic period where “everything shut down.”

Sounds like you’re using “lockdown” more generically to mean *any* sort of restriction, including relatively light restrictions, like where most (or all) businesses are open but patrons are simply required to mask up indoors.

Now many places are even repealing those light restrictions. People are sick of them, even liberals, so we’ve chosen to get rid of them — though it looks like Covid will continue to cause about as many American deaths per year as heart attacks or cancer (which are catch-all terms for a variety of diseases, not just one).

DC's vivid restrictions went away (conspicuously & miraculously) a couple days after the Ukraine war got under way and conveniently mere hours before the state of the union.
Notably, the White House's triple-mask brigade went from "masks or you're a super spreader who's killing my grandmother" political theater to "masks, what are they?" In record time.
But yeah, let's pretend you didn't know any of that and REALLY DO want to debate the definition of "is" and aren't just trying to change the subject. Let's see how that werks out for you.

The Omicron wave is comfortably in retreat and has been for awhile now. That provides a data-based, non-conspiratorial reason for the CDC’s guidance on the lifting of restrictions, if you’re inclined to look.

And if there’s another wave of a new variant that pushes daily deaths back over 2,000, the restriction guidance will be back. It’s the CDC’s mission to take notice of such things and formulate guidance to protect the public. Sorry!

You’ve offered no evidence that the CDC’s decisions have any connection to Ukraine, or to the Democrats’ or Biden’s own political fortunes more broadly, when the midterms are months away anyway. All you have is conjecture.

Anyway, the CDC doesn’t have, and has never had, the power to force the mayor of Podunk, South Dakota to instate mask mandates. The CDC only publishes guidance. So, if the GOP wants to cast itself as the Party that zigs whenever the CDC zags, then that’s their choice — bigly!
