Court Case 5123A American People vs. US Government. (Someone repost this in politics/conservatives/real_politcs?) | So, hear me out, everyone. I think we (The American People) should collectively sue the US government; This needs to be a unified effort. Drop all the rhetoric, and point our grievances at those where the divisive rhetoric is coming from; "But so and so had no part in this."
This is a no-risk lawsuit. The lawsuit should allege that the US government failed in its duty to function for the American people - instead of leading us and helping us work together they have divided us and have failed to hold each other accountable for their divisiveness collectively. Gone are the times where we could get along. Instead of our leaders leading us, they've been pitting us against each other. We need to let our government know that this is unacceptable and the time for the two-party system to be dissolved is now. In this, I recommend creating a multi party system divided into Nine parties of each you identify as either Progressive, Regressive, Liberal,
Conservative; The following parties should be divided among policy categories. With each policy category, I will give examples of what each category covers. Health: Health insurance and medicare; Education: Elementary, Secondary and Higher Education; Environment: Air quality, climate change, renewable and fossil energies; Social Welfare: Social Security, Welfare; Economic Affairs: Budget and taxes; Foreign Affairs and National Security: Defense spending; Culture and Society: Self determination (The right to choose), civil rights, the arts; Criminal Justice: Death Penalty, Illicit Drug policies, fire arm laws; Government Operation, campaign finance reform; This is just an idea that I will be working on with my local government and my representative in the house of representatives. I want to know what you guys think. I won't say anyone has a bad idea because everyone wants their voice heard. I will however say what is and isn't on topic. “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” R. Buckminster Fuller

I agree about change. I despair at the change coming from within a rotting system.
Crypto bros have made people like me advocating for Bitcoin look foolish with the endless stream of fads. However, I stand fast to the idea that monetary controls need to be set free from the Federal Reserve. Broad adoption of Bitcoin and related technologies pave the way for giving power back to the people.

I won't elaborate unless prompted. Have a good day. Good hunting.

I have never understood how bitcoin works. @.@

In a nutshell an anonymous developer released the software then disappeared from the public eye. It outlines a set of rules which can be run by nodes. Consensus is achieved through a process called proof of work which is the mining aspect people talk about. Break the rules of the system, get ignored. Insist on making up your own rules then you might maintain a fork of the original system, meanwhile the main Bitcoin keeps chugging along with or without you. It's fascinating stuff. Nobody has actual control to bend the rules without getting the majority of nodes and miners to agree. Like herding cats it's not easy. Has been done for some upgrades which were deemed essential by most. But if your aim is a personal advantage over others on the network you're not going to get their approval.
In summary it's rules without rulers.

So how do you do the proof of work?

This is something that isn't easy to boil down but I'll try.

Proof of work at this time is computed on specialty ASIC hardware. In the white paper it was surmised that 1CPU = 1 vote but as the technology has advanced the mining is primarily in the hands of industrial size mining farms.
What's happening is mining hardware produces hashes of the next block to be added to the blockchain. These blocks contain candidate transactions. When the cryptography meets a difficulty threshold the transactions are "ratified" by being included in the blockchain. Think of blockchain as being a ledger which cannot be altered unless the most recent blocks are replaced by a longer verifiable chain of blocks.

Why would a longer chain of blocks replace a shorter chain? Because there's more proof of work on that side of the ledger. The other shorter fork of blocks would be orphaned. These forks are typically short lived because solving a block has a reward paid in Bitcoin to the miner. If you mine on the shorter chain your reward is more likely to be orphaned thus forfeiting your reward. Therefore miners are pretty quick to build upon the side of the fork which appears to be winning.

There's more but I'll stop here for now.

So what exactly are we doing? What are we making? What is the commodity?

Damnit, I also said 23 million when the correct figure is 21 million. I catch myself saying the wrong one sometimes.

So, are you lending computing power to some project?

The only one I am lending computing power to currently is Folding@Home which is a science/medical project which a third party named Curecoin rewards crypto for pitching in. I also run nodes for a few different networks but I'm not participating in mining proof of work on those.

So basically it's what SETI has been doing for years?
0 ups, 3y
On a related note Bitcoin wasn't a whole-cloth invention. It was a novel way to employ existing technologies to solve a long-standing computer science dilemma called the "Byzantine generals problem".
The networking is built upon Torrent technology. Proof of work comes from an anti-spam measure named hashcash.
Anyway, thanks for asking questions about it.

Folding@Home is similar to SETI at Home. Any crypto that is issued from these is leveraging those platforms as proof of work to reward the people contributing.

Proof of work for Bitcoin is a means to its own end. There is not any tangible benefit besides that of maintaining the blockchain (ledger). There is some question as to if this is just wasteful or if it's more secure that way. In the cases for SETI and protein folding there are known answers out in the Universe. Say for example somebody devised new methods to observe how proteins are folded then that would be a shortcut to prove the work done without expending the compute time to get there.

When there are billions of dollars tied up in the value of Bitcoin few are willing to jump onto a proof of work model that accomplishes added utility without a complete guarantee that it won't cause the network to break down at a future time.

We're making consensus over who owns what on the ledger. The ability to transfer between parties without permission across borders without needing a trusted third party. Security that is iron-clad if you are the only party who holds the private key to your wallet. Accessible from anywhere with an internet connection. A finite supply of tokens. When mining are set to clock down over time so that in the end there will be 23 million Bitcoin. No inflation.

I understand if there's a disconnect as in there is no physical commodity. But if you have Bitcoin you have something rare that can be used as currency if others accept it. As is fiat money like dollars is already heavily digitized. I don't see people paying their mortgages etc. in cash.

Also question what is a dollar backed by? It's not gold. What is the intrinsic value of the dollar? Also consider how inflation has meant that during a lifetime it takes 10 times as many dollars to buy the same goods. Fiat due to the powers that be having levers to create more of it from nothing siphon value away from all of the existing dollars perpetually. If you hold dollars you are worth less every single day that passes.

I meant to say "When mining REWARDS are set to clock down..."

So, can you earn bitcoin on the side if you just put your computer to work? Or is it like traditional mining where you have to prospect and hope you get one? (The latter seems weird)

To mine anything meaningful you need specialized hardware for mining Bitcoin. These are called ASICs. There are some crypto currencies which can be mined using computer CPU or GPU so it's still possible to make something with standard computers.

I wouldn't say it's like prospecting. The mining hardware creates hashes which are measured against a difficulty target. The more hashes the machine can throw out there the more likely one will qualify.

The difficulty target is set so that out of all of the miners hashing on the network just one should solve a block every 10 minutes on average. Given the size of the network it's not a good idea to mine solo. It could take Months or years to solve a block. There are pools you can mine on which credit you for your portion of the work when the pool mines a block. It smooths out your expected returns with a more consistent payout.

Well, not really because you're here.

On the other hand, memes don't always have to be funny. They are also used to convey ideas.
