Oh yes... it was exactly 30 years ago in 1992's Batman Returns. Unfortunately, DeVito didn't get much praise in this role and his performance was largely panned by critics. Also, he was greatly overshadowed in the movie by the much more seductive Michelle Pfeiffer in the role of Cat Woman. In addition, I don't think the movie itself did all that well at the box office that year.
