Conservatives love big government, just not the parts of it that actually help people.

Um....welfare is a trap. It doesn't actually help anyone. The nanosecond you start to climb out of poverty - you lose it, and now you're starving again. If you decide to keep the father of your children in the home - you get less. You're encouraged to put yourself into worse situations in order to get more welfare.

I'm interested in which parts you think actually help people?

So your proposed solution for people who are below this poverty threshold is to let them starve to death?

Here's a wild idea, what if everyone regardless of wealth or income was guaranteed basic necessities from the government, that way you wouldn't have to put yourself in those risky situations in the first place. And don't give me any of this crap about "Oh its not really free because someone has to pay for those programs." Just take the taxpayer money the government would've used anyway on grenade launchers and tanks for the police.

Also it's hard to be against the military. They mostly are well intentioned weapons. You don't get mad at guns do you? It's the ones that use them that should be dealt with. As for police I'll be the first to say they are inadequately trained, overly weaponized and mischarecterized as warriors instead of peace officers.

Success or failure within a equal system.

To me the government is a welfare program. They only exist because of taxpayer money. Welfare and big government are a democratic thing. They call themselves liberal but are only liberal in spending money that isn't theirs on stuff that doesn't benefit the people paying them.
