It’s interesting how since Republicans have turned Fauci into such a hate symbol, they assume Democrats must uncritically fawn over him in an equal and opposite amount.
Fauci is the public face of the U.S. pandemic response, he does his job, he worked 18-20 hour days for several months (not sure whether he still does). He has been wrong from time to time about this pandemic, just like everyone else. He’s not perfect. No one is.
The real heroes though are the frontline nurses and doctors who are still — still — 2 years into this thing, being asked to work overtime and expose themselves physically, both to Covid itself as well to more death than they’ve ever seen before. Yes, doctors and nurses deal directly with death, that’s part of their job description, and always has been and will be. But the sheer volume of death in this pandemic has been something else. It weighs on health care workers — mentally, psychologically. Burnout has been real.
Dr. Fauci and other CDC/public health officials are doing their best, but they are working desk jobs. The ER and critical care personnel, on the other hand, who are out there intubating people and holding hands with loved ones as they say their goodbyes to an unconscious relative through a plastic screen and doing their best to explain to those in the ER waiting room why it’s been 48 hours and they still don’t have a bed yet are the real heroes.
And they would all tell you the same thing: get vaccinated, please. For our sake and for yours. It will greatly reduce the chance you’ll ever have to see us, and if you do, you’ll get to go home sooner and your odds of surviving will be much greater.
