The sad thing is kids in those places where the gop is burning and banning books are going to miss out. The last thing the right needs is another under educated generation of minority hating voters.

It’s crazy that you even attempted to debate an issue that is being reported by everyone. Even the nut jobs at fox are reporting it. Like it’s not a secret what the right is doing lol. They’re bragging about it. I’m amazed that folks are ok with their kids being denied the ability to learn about history.

Enough parents feel that the LBGTQ+ movement is not something that is age-appropriate curriculum material for elementary grade-school children. If this bill passes the legislature it will have gone through fair and square. Why don't you mind your shitty NE corner of Camden NJ or shit town San Fran, and we'll mind ours, mm okay?

I’m in the Midwest. And if it was just lbgt books I could almost understand but unfortunately it’s not. They want to delete any mention of slavery, the way native Americans were treated, really anything that makes us white folks uncomfortable talking about. It’s history, and kids need to learn our history. So we are going to have a country where a small percentage of kids will be unprepared to compete for higher education or jobs because they will know less than the rest of the kids that were allowed to learn all of our history.

Well I wouldn't be to sure about that, you should check your sources Florida aren't all dumb fvcks you know half of them are snow birds from the Northern Blue states that want to take advantage of the no state income tax and then have the brass ballz to criticize how the state runs itself with a balanced budget amendment in place. You don't think it's f**k-tards who wanted that a lot of it were rich retired libs who expect other people to pay for what they don't want to contribute.

You’re dad was right to talk about it with you. My folks weren’t interested in any news or politics. I now teach my kids to pay attention but they don’t have to agree with me. I just want them informed

Same here, I’m almost 50. It’s a whole different world. I just feel that kids need to know all of history and see it all being treated as history . If they don’t learn it all they won’t appreciate how much the country has grown and changed.

I don't happen to think the Florida bill is unreasonable. If the parents in a county are vivid blue they will make their opinions known to the local school board to no little effect, and if a so-called "Trumper" doesn't like it they would have to hold their nose and accept it, or explore other alternatives to schooling their kids.

"Everyone" should agree to this at least in theory but what the big cat fight has been about is the the lens filter being applied to specific text books. Unfortunately history is literally "old news" and who compiles and writes the books are essentially media editors. By inclusion and/or omission of specific facts the lens filter is applied with no little skill and text book writers can (and often) editorialize and sway the reader (learner) into drawing rather specific conclusions, whether religious, philosophical, or political. I'll give a common example of the Bible: Depending on what your denomination is your Bible may or may not include the 7 wisdom books with the Old Testament. Then you got the literal translation and the equivalency translation. And then, which of these translations? And, who is writing the footnotes? (Interpretation?) Same with history text books. This is why the Florida bill is being discussed, so parents in a given school district can give their input on the selection of course materials.

It doesn’t matter whose kids are being denied really. No kid should be denied learning about our history. I get taking out the inappropriate sexual material but there’s no reason to ban talk about slavery or the holocaust or the treatment native Americans got from us . You’re stuck on politics I’m talking about educating our kids about American history.
0 ups, 2y
Fine as such, I agree, but the bill only said making sure the curricula content should be 'age appropriate', meaning, 10 year-olds shouldn't need to see pictures of the Holodomor starvation, for example, to learn about part of what happened in ww2. This is something that sensible parents would want to be able to exercise their personal discretion and voice their concerns to the school board. Many teachers are also parents are not entirely unsympathetic to their concerns.

I get you , a lot of parts of the Bible have been omitted because they were inconvenient to politics of the time. I just feel all kids should be taught all our history. How can they love and respect our country without understanding who and what we are. I’m not some left wing nut. I served my boys are serving, I own more guns than I will ever need. I want our kids to know the struggles that we have been through so they love and respect America. I’m not a fan of trump or the extreme right but I’m not a fan of the extreme left either. Biden wouldn’t have been my first choice but he wasn’t trump. I honestly hope the Republican Party can give us some fresh options next presidential election. I also firmly believe in the old saying-“Those who ignore or forget history are doomed to repeat it.” More knowledge is better than less.

This is so true. In a perfect world there would be no partiality. But such as it is there will always be friction between those who want their opinions to predominate and to drown out others.

I miss the days when the news would just have a person from either side of any given topic and ask questions without bias and let the guests debate it. And then when the guests were done, the news outlet wouldn’t offer any opinions.

How I wish. I still remember watching Dan Rather with my dad as a kid and him doing everything but cuss him out. He would then proceed to tell me more about what was going on with whatever that particular bit of current events was that Dan left out of the picture and that was my 'fair and balanced' news. And he knew world history. It was his favorite topic, next to politics. And economics. No fan of taxes, Marxism, or the progressive left.

I gotta be honest, the vfw hall is probably the one place where I don’t see any division. We don’t put any news on, nobody talks politics, and when you see the bumper stickers on all the cars and trucks of my brothers there you’d think there would have to be some arguing going on. Even at church folks are sitting based on politics. My local bar even has two sections, one with fox on and one with msnbc on. But I will say this, when a guy got stuck in a ditch by the bar, everyone ran out and worked together to help the guy. So I guess there’s still hope

Like I was saying to Skullford, in Texas a school district actually told the teachers that if they speak on the holocaust they must also speak on the opposing view. Well for any charged topic really. I think I was taught about the holocaust in about 7th grade. And yeah the pictures were horrible. But I’m not aware of any schools teaching that stuff to little kids. And banning or burning books isn’t the way to handle topics that are uncomfortable. What would a teacher be able to say as the opposing view to the holocaust? And my kids didn’t start being taught about slavery or holocaust until they were in around 7-8th grade. Kids are smarter than we give them credit for
0 ups, 2y
Well, you can't tar every state and county with the same brush if there's one odd one here and there that don't want anything uncontroversial taught outside of their comfort zone. If there is an interest people (children) will seek knowledge out. This is a different era than when I grew up (before the internet) and your sources were only as good as the school or public library, or the college library if that was available.

Pretends all books should be in a school including pure liberal propaganda equivalent to Joseph Goebbels or Maos red book. I know you think kids should be reading about transgender sexual relations in elementary, but people with kids have other ideas.

My kids all grew up reading those books and they’re fine. Funny how they are only targeting stories about minorities and gay folks. Hell they’re even trying to ban our country’s history from being taught. Just like their boy Hitler. Ban or burn anything that makes their feelings hurt. Bunch of righty tighty snowflakes

Oh boy the CRT as history argument. Get real. Anyone can take independent facts and link them together to form a narrative. That's not the full picture though.
0 ups, 2y,

CRT is a legal term and is only taught in law schools. It’s another fake boogeyman the right are crying about that doesn’t exist in any elementary or high schools , anywhere in the country. Why the right want their kids to know less about our country’s history than kids from other countries will know is beyond stupid. Slavery happened. The holocaust happened. We treated the natives horribly. These are undeniable facts. What should they ban next, math? Because the election numbers made them feel bad?
1 up, 2y,

lol yes we did all those things. That is facts. The north stopped slavery long before other nations. That is a fact. Slavery still exists in many places in the world. Also fact. The constitution and the founding principles of this country led an end to slavery and led to womens rights, along with technology and capitalism. But all of this will be left out of the liberal education. When you present facts specific to a cause that is when the problem starts.

What is stupid is only showing the America is evil side and pretending equality doesn't now exist. Pretending things aren't incredibly good and better than 99 percent of human existence. That's not seeing the whole picture. Constantly spouting systemic racism isn't proof of intelligence.

The left is incredibly stupid because they only see the negatives of American culture, the negatives of religion, the negatives of capitalism. Its small sighted as is their "solutions". Look at Trump even. They made him into the worst human being alive. They literally cannot have a balanced view. That is worse indoctrination than prohibiting books from schools. Which certainly doesn't equate to burning books.

I don’t know man, I put four kids through public schools and they were taught the truth both good and bad about our history. One is a marine, one is heading to the Air Force, one is a veterinarian and one will be an electrician when he leaves high school. None of them ever felt guilty or bad about our history. It was just something they were expected to learn. Yeah trump was treated pretty bad from the start but over four years of him saying and doing crazy stuff and then the way he behaved after the election makes it tough for folks to feel sorry for him
1 up, 2y
I think the schools don’t need to be teaching that stuff to the younger kids but by the time they’re in 6th or 7th grade the kids are old enough to understand and grasp the content. It shouldn’t be being banned or burned

And they most definitely have been burning books in Texas. They proudly posted videos of it. I don’t think anyone should feel guilty for things that happened over a hundred years ago. But I do believe everyone needs to learn our history.

I don't want books burned either, or free speech stymied but there is a definite line for schools and stuff like this is it. I mean kids can Google this stuff anyway let's be honest, but having a book in school is like a recommendation. I don't think mein kamf belongs there either regardless of historical context. I'm sure we aren't that far apart on where our lines are.

I’m not a fan of banning the right from social media either. I say let folks speak their mind. I’m not on social media so it doesn’t matter to me. But for folks that are, it’s a good way to decide who you want to support. Every time AOC posts something it is usually not helpful for bringing people together. But she doesn’t get blocked.

Yeah it's funny how everyone promotes unity then bashes each other's head in. We should be seeking harmony not unity. How can we take all of our values and still work together instead of banging our heads against the wall trying to change or demonize each other.
1 up, 2y
Yeah that’s a tough one. I’m guilty of it myself. And I usually know I was wrong minutes after doing it. My kids are much more tolerant and accepting of different views than I can be

Yeah there’s certainly books like that , that shouldn’t be in grade or high school. That seems to be more appropriate on a college campus . Really any hyper sexualized books other than scientific books about the body shouldn’t be in a classroom. But my frustration comes from all the other books being banned solely based on race in them. There’s a district in Texas that said if a teacher talks about the holocaust, they have to present the opposing view. I mean think about that , the opposing view was the nazis. I know my meme is an exaggeration, but that’s what we do here. But who wants to be the opposing view on the holocaust?
0 ups, 2y,
1 reply
For sure. Opposing views on the holocaust have no basis for existence. Now the idea that humans are readily turned into nazis is definitely an idea worth exploring. We all should recognize the darkness we are capable of.
1 up, 2y
The desire of one group to want to destroy another is old as time. If someone could figure out how and why we as humans behave like that and then stop it from happening would be the greatest discovery in history
