Fed up with crime and corruption, the Mexican town of Cherán organized
and ran politicians, political parties and criminals out and established
neighborhood councils and direct democracy in 2011. The
neighborhoods patrol the town and forests to make sure their community
is rid of politicians and crime. In 2017, Cherán had the lowest homicide rate
in Michoacán and possibly all of Mexico. They have also successfully
thwarted corruption.
