I think that people sometimes believe that politics in a democracy should strictly be majority rules, many times only based on election results. The founders clearly knew the inherent danger with that type of thinking, and designed the govt to guard against it.
For example, rights aren't based on the whims of the majority; the rights of those in the minority need to be protected because rights don't disappear just because the majority says they do. That's why any single branch of the govt (particularly the two branches elected by the people) have their powers checked by the other branches. In theory a perfect balance of checks. In practice, not always so much so.
