They are. Think about it. Non mammalian synapsids, also known as the class Gymnotheria (Naked Beasts) are also known as prototype mammals. So reptiles are prototype birds.

Its a proposed class grouping non mammalian synapsids. I heard about it in online forums. They are to mammals what reptiles are to birds.
