Joe Biden once again took a political hit for leveling with the American people, doing the logical and obviously right (and on paper, popular) thing - ending America's longest war. Worth noting also that it was simply a fulfillment of the terms of a withdrawal deal negotiated under Trump - a withdrawal conveniently timed by Trump to take place *after* the 2020 elections. There was never going to be a clean or pretty way to leave Afghanistan, however. Should Biden have been even more cynical about the Afghan government's ability to stand without us, and left even earlier? Probably.
I feel for the innocent Afghan people, but if your government is corrupt and incompetent and the Afghan people generally aren't willing to stand up to the religiously dogmatic, xenophobic, rifle-toting fascist rednecks in their midst, this is what they get.
Lessons for us here at home?
