I'm not sure how best to implement something like this, but I imagine that when you "click to show", it shows the image and another icon that opens the meme in a new window/tab.

If you have to do that, you should do this.
1. Copy the link
2. Add image to it like this: 5x0yfe.jpg (click to show)
3. Turn it from i.imgflip and xxxxxx.jpg or .gif to imgflip.com and /i/ or /gif/xxxxxx
4. Boom, You're in the image link from the comments they've used.
I tried that myself and it worked, you should do that.
