People have a stereotyped image of homelessness. But through the difficulty of finding truly affordable housing (a whole other topic), it's more common than you might think.
If you end up homeless through an unexpected job loss, medical bankruptcy, etc., then it can be incredibly difficult to get back on your feet. Who is going to hire someone who can't get regular sleep, or a shower, or is constantly getting sick and missing work through exposure to the elements? You're less likely to be productive, and more likely to enter a downward spiral and eventually cost the taxpayer more in terms of other services.
Example: Some homeless people get desperate enough to commit crimes literally in order to go to jail in order to have a roof over their heads. However, jail isn't a great option since it deprives you of freedom and gives you a criminal record, which is another impediment to getting back on a career path.
I called universal housing "communist" to be provocative, but a minimum non-carceral housing guarantee for all citizens can actually be seen as an element of sustainable capitalism.
